On Tuesday, January 23, 2014, the long awaited National Disabilities Bill was finally tabled in the Legislative Committee of Cabinet for review and then approval by Cabinet before it either goes to Joint Select Committee or Parliament for debate.
The steps to this phase has been almost 10 years. The journey towards the end is therefore closer than we could imagine and I know this will be an exciting day in the lives of all persons with disabilities who will then (when passed) have legal recourse against those who would discriminate against them.
National Disability 2014 Data Collection Drive
The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disability has advised tha the Phase 2 of the national data collection process for children, adults and the elderly with disability will begin in February 2014. The agency is encourage all persons with disaiblities and families/parents of children with disabilities to register with the JCPD as this will help the Government with planning properly for them.

Teachers to benefit from Special Needs Training
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Scores of Jamaican classroom teachers will benefit from the introduction of a Special Education module that will eventually equip them with strategies to help them instruct students with special needs.
According to the Education Ministry, the implementation of the training course, entitled ‘Inclusive Education: Teaching Children with Exceptionalities in Mainstream Classrooms’, is being spearheaded by the Special Education Project of the Education System Transformation Programme.
JCPD Economic Empowerment Grant 2014 Application Now Open
The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD) announces that 2014 Applications for the Economic Empowerment Grant is now open. Persons with disabilities, or parents of children with disabilities wishing to start a business are encouraged to submit their application so it can be considered. grant awards are up to $150,000 for an individual project or up to a maximum of $400,000 for a group project.
